Methylation is a biochemical process essential to life. Life as we know it cannot exist without methylation. Methylation appears to influence gene expression and the ability to turn genes on and off (epigenetics). Anti-aging experts have concluded that proper methylation іѕ essential for healthy-aging. Many of us have variations in our genes that impede the body’s ability to methylate properly.
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme controlled by our MTHFR genes. These genes regulate our entire body, signaling when to turn on and off entire systems, including how we absorb foods, nutrients and medications, how we react to our environment and how we heal and detox. If there is a mutation it means the body and most systems (cardiac, neurological, GI, endocrine) are not functioning properly and this factor can be detrimental to healing from illness since it affects how our body functions, reacts and heals. There are now tests available to check for MTHFR gene mutations; ask your doctor if interested. It is estimated that up to 50% of us have this issue.
“Methylation is a biochemical process involving the transfer of an active methyl group between molecules. Methylation is required for cell division, DNA and RNA synthesis, early Central Nervous System development, gene expression, immune cell differentiation, post-transcriptional modification, neurotransmitter synthesis and metabolism, histamine clearance, detoxification, hormone clearance, cellular energy metabolism, phospholipid synthesis, and myelination of peripheral nerves.” — Chris Kresser, The Kresser Institute
The Power of Trimethylglycine
Trimethylglycine (tri-methyl-glycine), also called TMG, may be one of the most important additions to a nutritional balancing supplement program. Methylation relies on the presence of adequate TMG. Few people have heard of it despite its being essential for supporting good health. It is a vitamin-like substance which functions as a methyl donor, detoxifier, antioxidant, energy booster and more. Most of us require more than is obtained through the diet and noticeably benefit from TMG supplementation. Toxins (including toxic metals and chemicals), infections, inflammation, stress, certain medications and illnesses may quickly exhaust existing TMG in the body. Small amounts of TMG can be found in vegetables like beets, broccoli and spinach, but not in sufficient amounts, particularly for people with elevated mercury, copper and/or cadmium (a common issue, as measured in a Hair Mineral Analysis).
Homocysteine is a common amino acid in the blood which mostly comes from eating meat. High levels of it are linked to early development of heart disease. In excess, homocysteine irritates the arteries and is associated with inflammation. As we age, methylation in the body declines, which leads to increased homocysteine — resulting in heart and blood vessel disease. Homocysteine is a stronger marker of heart disease than cholesterol levels. Multiple published studies have proven that TMG supplementation safely reduces homocysteine levels in people with elevated levels. Have your blood levels of homocysteine and C-reactive protein (CRP) checked ASAP. These are inflammation markers.
Supplementing with TMG is particularly important for those who take methylation-inhibiting drugs such as valproic acid (to treat seizures, bipolar disorder & migraines); cholestyramine (to lower cholesterol); oral contraceptives; Proton Pump Inhibitors (such as Prilosec & Prevacid) and antibiotics.
Trimethylglycine is designed to help support healthy methylation and homocysteine levels when taken daily. This delivers huge health and anti-aging benefits. The improved methylation-reactions enable toxins to be become more water soluble, allowing the body to remove them more easily.

Don’t Forget About DMG
Dimethylglycine (DMG) helps to optimize oxygen uptake which results in a faster recovery time from exercise and also functions as a methyl donor. Methyl donors influence alertness, concentration, energy and well-being. DMG supports good health, vitality and well-being. A natural substance found in foods like liver, beans, seeds and grains, DMG is an intermediary metabolite—meaning it is rapidly broken down into other useful substances your body requires to end premature aging.
